~ ATTENTION-DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER ~
With the growth and development of psychiatry and the availability of psychiatric services, many people are being seen and given diagnoses that attempt to understand their problem behaviors or patterns of living. One of the most common of these diagnoses in children is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a cluster of behaviors that is defined in particular ways by psychiatrists and helping practitioners. There are three common symptoms to ADHD that children and adults exhibit: impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention. However, it is important to understand that these behaviors alone do not amount to ADHD. These behaviors can be attributable to a variety of conditions and experiences that all people may have. It is, therefore, important to have a person with these symptoms seen by a family doctor or preferably at least one psychiatrist/psychologist who can make this diagnosis.
